So 20-09 Opened In Oakland With mini-camp in Alameda Over The Weekend, And There Were New Faces & Old Issues Under The Sun:

1st Round Draft Pick, Darius Heywood-Bey (DHB) looked stellar Friday, catching passes with his hands, and flashing some of his speed. Alot of the NATION believes there's a similarity with Cliff Branch.I don't see it. i understand the speed aspect, but that's all. He more reminds me of Tim Brown so far, and unproven as he is, and words like "project" being associated with him. I say he's more like Ron Brown(LA Raiders) right now.He runs decent routes, and does have "stretch" speed. He is defintely "football smart" and isn't at all a "prima-donna" which is a relief. he had some drops on Saturday, and was "tightening up" but he came back Sunday. Overall. He ain't ready to start. For me, It's Chaz Schillens & Johnnie Lee Higgins right now.

Especially after Dr. Javon Walker's diagnosis of himself. This dude can't be trusted. Thus why there was a call to sign a Marvin Harrison, Torry Holt Or Amani Toomer before the draft for some quality, veteran insurance for our "magnent for mugging", J-Walk! He could've at least e-mailed 1220, and told them he was doing something to himself. Keep Your Un-Patched Eye On This One!

JaMarcus Russell came in with a bucket of KFC Grilled. He's got a lil gut, and there's still talk of "grasping the game" mentally. He needs to be further along as a # 1 qb, and take this shit more serious. At some point he's gonna have to flash some personality, and UMPH! and get off the "Too Country Cool" attitude he's got. He needs to be all up under Jeff Garcia, and soaking up game from the veteran, learning the ways to go about your daily work as a "leader" and get his "hustle" on. For $50 million Raider bucks (not redeemable at Dave & Buster's) he should be watching dvd's of his games in his $95,000 dollar Phantom while driving around Alameda & Oakland.I'd have him a room at 1220 so he could stay over night sometimes & study all night.
I DON'T WANT HIM TO BE THE NEXT RYAN LEAF ON OUR MONEY & TIME!!!

I don't know why, but i'm feeling something positive about rookie lb Slade Norris(Oregan State) outside of his name, which is from "Football Names 101". Here's Hoping Slade Norris Is This Years Ricky Brown. I just hope my boy RB don't lose his job. GET WELL Ricky Beezy!

Why all the hate for Russell? He is what he is a young QB with a lot to learn, he is not fat he is big and your crack about KFC was uncalled for. Garcia is a veteran QB and I hope he can help Russell learn the ropes. DHB is a project and you don't use your #1 pick on a project, we need our #1 to start now not later.

Was Russell's work ethic questioned in college, or was it just labeled that way because he is a big guy?

I don't remember ever reading him having any "work" or "dedication" issues during college.

Again, I think people just "expect a person to look a certain way" based on what they've seen.

I "hope" Russell will be great, but you can never tell.
I, for one, am glad we took a chance on drafting him as our Franchise QB of the future.
You gotta role the dice once in awhile and at least "try to find a great leader."

If we would have passed on him, I would be shocked if we would have selected some other QB in the 4th or 5th round.

I first wanna say it is a pleasure to hear "Real" football talk from core Raider fans who know their shite. I respect all the opinions. Love it.

Jamarcus Russell. God bless him. Think back though. He loses the Suger Bowl to Brady Quinn, and do you still want Jamarcus Russell, honestly. do you even give him a first thought ? I'd like to see him succeed, trust me. I just don't see it. The effort that it takes off-the-field to perfect this game. That's what's being questioned more than the weight. I'd just like to see a sleeker J-Marc, for mobility sakes, and for it not to be an issue, because it is when it comes to his performance. maybe not where some of you are, but it's talked about here, and a concern of many fans.
I'm on the "wait & see" plan too. I'm outnumbered there, but how long does he get, and is he on borrowed time or do we live with him, no matter what for the next 4 years ?

Swords Up!

^^^

I feel if you surround him with some talent (which we have). And put a competent defense on the field. J Russ can win and march us downfield just like he did in LSU.

Definitely would love to see him taking a more proactive approach. Also, I am going off of what I know from notes and recaps.

It's always been my opinion that "every player is on borrowed time."
There's only room for great results.
If Garcia shows him up at camp and in Preseason, I say, let Garcia start.

My main allegiance is to the team, so I don't care what the name on the back of the jersey says as long as it's helping us win.

I think the amount of "time he (or any one player) has" is directly related to the organization being able to find a "more effective replacement."

JRaider17, I didn't get to camp. Got report from a source friend at 1220, and saw some of the highlights on some of the shows out here.

By most reports, DHB looked terrible at mini-camp. They said he dropped a lot of balls. Anyway, what's with these comparisons? What are they actually based on? I get the feeling people saying Cliff Branch, Tim Brown, etc. never saw DHB in college. Tim Brown was one of the best all-purpose college WR's ever. The word "project" is profoundly different for Brown because he was already had a stellar set of football skills that DHB lacks. As for Branch, fuck that, Branch would get eaten alive by NFL DB's in 2009 so that doesn't make me feel one bit better.

JLH is a slot guy IMO. You still need a 1-2. I'll take Schillens as my #2 because he's unproven and there isn't much value to be had with an available replacement #2.

Jamarcus wasn't going to lose the Sugar Bowl to Brady Quinn, and the only people saying ND had a chance were dumbasses on Raiderfans.net who knew nothing about college football. Quinn's Notre Dame team is one of the most overrated football teams in college football history. They were smashed and trashed by every good team they played that season. LSU had a bunch of future NFL players on their team as well.

I was actually for the Jamarcus pick way before the game, but the Raiders have completely mishandled his development.

I say we give Ari our number 1 next year for Boldin. Now matter how good we are or how bad we are we dont need to pick in the top 20 next year at all so give that pick up and get a Number 1 wr in here.

Come on man..... how much of a fucking mess would we have right now if we traded for Boldin.

You think Al got ripped for drafting DHB, imagine how ripped his asshole would be if he traded for Boldin RIGHT after drafting DHB #7

We learned.....

1.) Jamarcus is fat, lazy, stupid and probably has an odor problem

2.) DHB is, indeed, a project WR

3.) Jamarcus is fat and lazy. Mostly fat, but equally as lazy.

Raiders' Heyward-Bey: 'I'm not in college anymore'

After one day of his first NFL minicamp, Oakland Raiders' draft choice Darrius Heyward-Bey(notes) realized he's not in college anymore.

He dropped three catchable passes without a defender on him, he tweaked a hamstring and he was introduced to Raiders' cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha(notes) who made him look like a novice, according to the Contra Costa Times.

According to the report, Heyward-Bey broke from the line of scrimmage, called upon the speed that compelled the Raiders to select him at No. 7 in the NFL draft last month and sprinted downfield.

Heyward-Bey broke off his route, cut inside and turned his head toward quarterback JaMarcus Russell(notes) as the ball traveled toward his outstretched hands.

Asomugha played off Heyward-Bey's body language, broke for the ball at the same time, cut in front of the tall, strapping receiver and reached the ball before Heyward-Bey knew what happened.

"I came back,"and I just went, 'All right, I'm not in college anymore,'" Heyward-Bey said of his welcome-to-the-NFL moment,

You're right. We pretty much have no choice. I hope this dude is one of those Colston type players that just comes in as a rookie and wows everybody.
