View Full Version : R.O.C.’s "New Years Resolution" List

I made this post a while back, but for some dumb reason I'd thought I'd wait until New Years to post it...well I got wasted and totally forgot about it until I stumbled onto the document on my pc :D.

Anyway, here is the post...hopefully some of the ideas will be helpful:

As we head into 2011 with a somewhat successful season after so many terrible ones, I think its safe to say we have plenty to look forward to in the coming years. This website is a great place for Raiders fans to get together and be able to talk freely about their team; unfortunately it seems barely anyone knows about it. We need to get the R.O.C. out there to Raider fans…once word spreads people will come in droves.

Here are my suggestions:
1. Get the site to show up when searching for “Raiders message board” or “Raiders forum” in Google.
When searching using either phrase, the first site to pop up is RF.Net and after that a couple of random websites and some that have sections of their site dedicated to the Raiders. The only other dedicated Raiders forum that pops up on the first page is RF.Org. I’ve looked through 9 straight pages when searching using both phrases and I have yet to see a link to R.O.C. appear. We have to change this.

I did a little research, and while you can pay people for SEOs (Search Engine Optimization), Google offers Webmaster Tools ( https://www.google.com/accounts/ServiceLogin?service=sitemaps&passive=true&nui=1&continue=https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/&followup=https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/&hl=en ) for free that should help improve site visibility. In the short time I’ve been here, I don’t know who owns R.O.C., but whoever is the admin, if you can do this it could really help attract Raider fans. I’ll continue to look up other methods to help get our site onto the first page of Google searches.

Another thing I found that could really help is expanding the name of the site. Look at the site name, it reads: “R.O.C. – Powered by vBulletin”. That gives no real description of what this site is about, and is probably what is keeping the site from being shown during Google searches. It should probably be expanded to “R.O.C. – Oakland Raiders Message Board & Forum – Powered by vBulletin” or something along those lines.

2. Get rid of the “Teh PREEMIUM Section”
Look, I don’t really know what happened with some of you guys over at RF.net that forced you to create R.O.C (I’m glad it did happen because this site is awesome)…but that section kind of looks pathetic from an outsider’s perspective. It was funny for a while, I thought it wasn’t permanent but now it seems like it will be. It’s also a useless section because it takes posts away from the “Raider Talk 24/7” section.

3. Close off the chatbox during Game Day/ switch to a different ChatBox program that features instant messaging.
Not really a big deal, but I think it would be best if the chatbox was closed off during Raiders games. If people want to discuss whats happening during the games, they could talk about it in the “Official Game Day Thread”. The reason for this is to help the site become more visible during Google searches. If someone searched for something specific that was Raider related and it happened to be said/linked to in one of the Game Day threads…it will show up on a search. Also, it helps to make the forum look livelier.

The other option is to find a ChatBox program that features instant messaging, as in as soon as you type a message it will appear. I believe most of those types of web chatboxes are made with Java…so it may slow down the website. This is why I recommend closing off the chatbox completely during Game Day, since that is when the site will be the most active.

4. Site Redesign
Obviously for purely aesthetic purposes, but I think a site redesign may be in order. The site as it stands seems a bit too dark, and doesn’t have enough silver to give it that “Raider-feel”. I could help…somewhat. I’ve made some forums in the past using free forum hosts such as InvisionFree and I’m sure vBulletin isn’t too far off. Another method is to use a “Skin Selector” and let the users pick from pre-made templates how they want the site to look. Most templates are available for free, and quite a few of them are pretty good.

*EDIT* Whoever added the new logo at the top & bottom of the page, kudos, it has helped the site look much more fresh. Still would be nice to have another option for a silver/lighter colored forum, but I can deal with this one.

5. Start becoming more active with Twitter/Facebook.
I don’t use Twitter, but I’ve signed up to the ROC FB page and it’s basically dead. If someone could be bothered to update it every other day or so with major Raider-related news it might help attract more users to the site. If no one else would like to, I’d be happy to takeover the ROC FB page. Once constant updates start happening, if everyone could refer the FB page to your Raider friends & family we could have a pretty active FB page and hopefully some of those people start using the forums as well.

6. Give ROC-BOT his own forum & hide his posts from the “Latest Posts” section at the top.

I think it'd be nice to give ROC-BOT his own forum section and/or where his posts don't show up in the "Latest Posts". It would be nice to be able to start a thread on the "Around the NFL" section of the forum and not have it buried 30 mins later by posts from ROC-BOT. If its not possible to hide his posts, maybe just get rid of ROC-BOT? I'd rather be notified in the latest posts section of valuable threads made by fellow bros than get notified of a story ROC-BOT posted that you could easily find on NFL.com or any major site.

7. "Shrink" the layout of the forums?

I guess this could've fit the "Site Redesign" suggestion, but meh, I wanted to end with 7 suggestions rather than 6.

Another football message board I visit is http://www.texanstalk.com/forums/ , and as you can see the width of their forum is a bit smaller than ours. I find that this allows text to be read much easier, especially in long as hell posts like this one. Also, instead of having empty space on the sides like that forum, maybe put something Raider related or even pics of Raider players...although I'm not sure of the legality of doing that.

If anyone has any suggestions they would like to add, please do so. Also note that I am willing to help in whatever way I can, I’m not just barking orders and expecting the admin(s)/mods to do them. We need to work together to make the ROC the #1 Raiders message board bros :bro: .

Good ideas Kulu:clap: but IMO having the chat box open on gamedays is good for us. Personally I'd rather have that and then have the gameday thread with thoughts before/during/ and after the game.

Fair enough bro, this is the first forum I've used to have a chatbox feature and I haven't been here as long so maybe thats why I don't like it as much (yet). I'd probably like it a lot more if it was a bit quicker, I doubt there is one that has instant messaging, but no harm in trying to find one anyway.

Time to Google!

I guess since I'm not a PREEMIUM 2010 MEMBUR I'm not as close to that section as you are :D.

Also, did a quick search and ran across this instant messaging add on for vBulletin (what this site uses): Openfire Integration (http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=191448)
It was last updated in '08, so I guess I'll look for one that is newer/better supported.

It sounds promising. But i'm wondering how well this service (or a similar one) will handle high volumes of users. Do you have any experience using this type of add-on and does it cause slow down for the servers?

I've used free forum hosts like ProBoards and InvisionFree before, but I've never used vBulletin, which as far as I know should be able to handle stuff like this easily. Now that is the add on alone, add in users and then it depends on the servers. Last time I checked we average around 20-30 people on during gameday, with about 10-15 of them actively using the chatbox. I guess the only way we'll be able to find out would be to test the add on out.

I've also found a few more...although I think they are more similar to the chatbox we have now than the one I posted earlier...still, maybe they are worth a look. If the instant messaging add on doesn't pan out, these ones may be faster than our current chatbox.

GCBOS - Generic Chat Box Operating System (http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=240659)

vBShout v5 (http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=236970)

Inferno vBShout Lite 2.5.0 (http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=147346)

Cyb - Chatbox (http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=201283)

Just a FYI, the version of vBulletin we are using is 3.8.1 and all the addons I've looked up are made for that version. Currently the latest version is 4.0, which may have much better support for features like this. However, I think it costs $ to upgrade...and if thats the case screw it. If it is free though, might as well go for it :D.

Was thinking the same. I don't think we'll have to worry about this place getting watered down w/ posters b/c I think the nature of the forum will have the weak out before too long.

I don't think the chatbox should be closed during game days but gettin the gameday threads goin more def would help out.

That ROC Bot idea is a good one IMO. Ppl respond more to threads started by members

Chatbox stays. No discussion. Chatting on threads is like using snail mail. The core members that created this site and pay to keep it going would agree.

I think myself and Jake are the only ones who push this site on twitter, you don't need millions of followers to promote it either. Would like to see more doing it too.

Thanks for the input tho! This is the best raiderfan site. I do encourage everyone to log on by Googling the name too. It does work.

Don't forget to donate bros!!!

I, for one, think ROC-BOT is DEFINITELY worthy of his own FORUM at the ROC for all his CONTRIBUTIONS to the site.:bro:

Interesting, maybe I'll put a link to the site in a sig or something on the other forums I visit if thats allowed.

And I think its pretty clear everyone wants to keep the chatbox open during gameday, no problem with that, but it'd be nice right now in the off season to test out the instant messaging & chatbox addons I listed earlier in hopes that one of them will be faster and maybe better featured.

I think the most important suggestion out of all the ones I listed would be suggestion #1. Expanding the name to help put it on Google searches will go a long way. I can't remember if there is a CAPTCHA phrase when you register or not, but its probably best to add it if we do do #1 because spam bots will become more frequent.

I agree; chatbox should always be enabled. Otherwise, these are some good ideas, particularly with Google and Facebook.

Good thread Kuluminati, some very good points there. I'll weigh in on a few, if I may.

Like Jayel said, the twittah has actually been more active lately than ever and will continue to be, unfortunately it is off season and not much to tweet about.

Facebook has been slightly more active but not much, you're absolutely right. Pretty dead. It has been used lately for commenting on blogs and dropping links in there. Other than that facebook just isn't that great for marketing purposes IMO.. couldn't you just refer your Raider friends to the ROC anyway?

Jake

Also the thing you gotta remember when it comes to marketing and promo and whatnot, Kuluminati is that we have a pretty rare (unfortunately) demographic here. We're very "liberal" here and it's just not for every Raider fan. We're living in a pussified time and people wanna hop online, act phony, give soft takes and e-hifives, have a few LOLz and shun those that say anything provocative.

I'm pretty sure more people know about ROC than you think. I guarantee at least half of RFN knows about ROC, all "25,000" of them. ROC's been spammed all over the place (by an unknown source) We're linked up in a lot of places, been mentioned in Jerry Mac and others blogs, Erie sent ROC a lot of traffic when he had his thing going on. etc.

Don't get me wrong I'm not disagreeing with your point on gettin the word out, obviously the more you put it out there the more looks you'll get. My point is just only that I think more know about ROC than you may think and that the demographic for here is more of a "niche" than your average Raidah board.

I don't use twitter so I can't really comment on it, but yeah, I think your right about FB...not much you can do with it. I'll probably refer some friends as next season gets closer.

While I'm not easily offended, I can totally see why others would be. Nothing wrong with that though, it just means we need to try and reach out to those Raider fans that like to speak their mind but don't have a place to do so. If we can take advantage of Google and somehow get the ROC to show up on the first page we'd be able to attract a lot of people...and with some luck a few of those people will make ROC their home.

I wouldn't doubt that ROC is fairly "popular" around RFN, hell I used to visit RFN daily and only found out about ROC after Erie did that billboard. Again, while a ton of them may know about ROC, they aren't the type of people we should be trying to attract.

I understand, and I agree this board isn't for everyone. Still, I'm pretty damn sure there are more Raider fans out there like us then just the 20-30 that visit here regularly :D. Anyway, thanks for posting man, I liked hearing your take on things.

Oh, and can anyone tell me who owns this site? Maybe that should be my 8th suggestion, admins having their names in a different color so newer members like me can know who the hell they are. :D

I guess it varies with each person. It just strains my eyes a bit more when reading stuff on a site in this format over one that is shrunk. It probably doesn't help that this site is mostly black either :D.
