Some of y'all might have seen this problem floating around on the internet as of late....

Anyways, what's the answer?

I haven't done algebra in 30 years ...

but i'm guessing 9+3 =12 ... X 2 =24
48 divided by 24 = 2

is it a trick question ?

What is X?

This is basically what I came up with.

I don't know if y'all remember PEMDAS, but if you take that into account, it would be 288, because you multiply and divide from left to right...but at the same time, if it's written as a fraction, it's completely different.

I'm going with 288, but this has been fuckin with my mind!

I guess....but neither is wrong.. It's a principle of math that it doesn't matter how you get to the result just as long as your work checks out, no?

The numbers next to the parenthesis always take priority. It is written 48/2(9+3) so the order is add first then times it with 2 to give you 48/24 = 2

It was not written 48/2 X (9+3) originally.

technically there is supposed to be parentheses around the whole denominator so it should look like

48/ (2 * (9 + 3)) to distinguish between these two forms.

This problem is because of using the / character for division. If we wrote this equation on paper we could use the horizontal line for fraction and it would go over the whole denominator, making it easier to tell.

It was not written 48/2 X (9+3) originally.

If you follow PEMDAS, you would add what's in the Parenthesis first
48÷2(12)

Then, you would Multiply/Divide from left to right, regardless of which comes first; they have equal priority. The parenthesis simply means "multiply". Same thing as
48÷2*12

Following that, you would get 288.

Now, I read yesterday some guy stating that there are some math professors who state that a number connected to a parenthesis, ie 2(12), takes precedence over a simple * for multiplication. Why, I don't know; no explanation was provided. If we take this as fact, then you are right, the answer would be 2. I took a lot of math throughout school, and started out as an engineer here at UCSD and went through a lot of calculus, and I don't remember ever having a professor that said that a number connected to a parenthesis takes priority over a regular multiplication or division sign.

So basically, I don't know what to believe, and I kinda think that's the point. It all depends on how you read the equation, basically.

Travis
04-10-2011, 06:39 PM
You're missing the point. Like DC said there are parenthesis around the whole denominator

2(12) is the same as (2(12)) but its redundant to show it that way.

But you can't distribute 2. I can't really explain it but you can't do x÷y(a+b)=x÷(ya+yb). I think it's because the 2 is supposed to be dividing into 48, so you can't just take it out of its own problem. It's just RONG!
