View Full Version : Jamarcus Russell having a good time

At least there’s no beer bong, and he’s wearing a shirt.
That thought immediately comes to mind upon the release of several photos of fun-loving Oakland Raiders quarterback JaMarcus Russell having a good time that has been immortalized at partychaser.com, per David White of the San Francisco Chronicle.
Unlike the famous shots of Arizona Cardinals quarterback Matt Leinart and Tennessee Titans quarterback Vince Young, Russell’s pictures are much tamer.
The imposing quarterback is shown holding what appears to be some sort of cocktail, brandishing an unlit cigar and wearing fancy jewelry, including a large charm necklace depicting him wearing his No. 2 Raiders jersey.
Do the pictures tell a story or define Russell?
I tend to doubt it, but it will hurt how he’s perceived in some people’s eyes.
As we’ve all learned in today’s modern age, perception is reality.
When you factor in Russell’s lengthy contract holdout as a rookie along with persistent criticism that he needs to work harder, get in better shape and emerge as a fiery leader when he seems to have a perpetually laid-back personality, this kind of thing can take on a life of its own.
At least it did for Leinart and Young, who wound up being severely ridiculed.
As White rightly points out, quarterback is the top spot.
He’s the one guy everyone is watching. Sometimes, how someone comports themselves in social situations can affect their career.
In the end, though, if you get it done on the field like, say, a Joe Namath, then hardly anyone will care about what you do off the field.
When you’re an unproven quarterback like Russell, Leinart and Young, though, everything you do and say faces extreme scrutiny.
“If he becomes a star, people will say he matured his way out of this party stuff,” White writes. “If he loses his job to a veteran backup, just like Leinart and Young did, people will say he spent too much time partying and too little time studying. Just ask Leinart and Young.”
And, somewhere, Raiders backup quarterback Jeff Garcia is smiling, eagerly awaiting his chance to unseat Russell.

Articles like this will end up looking brilliant or extremely stupid in a few months. We shall see.
How?? The article clearly states that if Jamarcus steps it up and performs like he was drafted to and expected to by everyone including the Raiders, than those pictures would be rendered irrelevant. Detach jaws from nutsack long enough to analyze the article properly. :roc:

big ben is what? 6'5'' 240? McNabb 6'2'' 240?
I guess you could argue with McNabb's build but one inch does not equate to 20 lbs comparing Ben to JaMarcus.
Like Ive said before, his weight is not a major concern as long as he's not constantly gaining weight which would slow him down. It comes down to playing good football. Many QB's can't scramble at all. JaMarcus needs to become a better pocket qb and learn the ins and outs of the pro level. I dont think his weight is a big factor.

The last line is key was what I was specifically referring to:
"And, somewhere, Raiders backup quarterback Jeff Garcia is smiling, eagerly awaiting his chance to unseat Russell."
Obviously the writer has made up his mind, when he writes that combined with his lengthy descriptions of Russell's off the field activity. Exactly, it will be rendered irrelevant if he performs well.

I think why most of us that can be perceived as being negative are really pulling hard for him to succeed. At least that's how I am. Cuz if he doesn't turn out great, were fucked..and the thought of it pisses me off! No argument there. I wanna see him work his ass off and win some damn games. Whether he was drafted 1 or whatever I just wanna see him make this team better.
Think about it, if he ends up sucking, were screwed for a few MORE years when we were supposed to be set at the position.
How can we as fans not be critical of his leadership, work ethic, progress, etc.?
If McFadden came into camp looking like the bus, he would get ripped on too, and work ethic questioned.
Just win some damn games!!

Cuz if he doesn't turn out great, were fucked..and the thought of it pisses me off!
Yeah, but to put things into perspective:
Even if he does turn out to be a 'great quarterback', it's no guarantee that this team/organization will win a SuperBowl with him at the helm.
This team's still got a lot of holes all over the ship.
Noone's got enough fingers to plug them all in one season, and we keep reaching for crazy pics during the draft instead of grabbing "accompllshed, successful players".
That last factoid alone is what drives me nuts.
If I was in JaMarcus' shoes, and watching these crazy-ass drafts the last two seasons, I'd probably be doing the same thing...having fun before the next few crops of Draft Picks go flop!
I'm a Raider fan through-and-through, but my hypocrisy only goes so far.
It's time for this organization to get their shit together. Serious.

It was in March so that's okay. Cuz really, don't all starting QB's in this league look 5 mos. pregnant and grow raptor-like finger nails and wear jersey bling in March. Wait, nope. Just our guy...awesome.

Comment From Sam J]
When you see Jamarcus play the way he did at the OTA, does that make you think that he's regressed and won't be able to build off of the wins at the end of last season?
Answer from Jerry Mac
jerrymac:
We saw one two-hour practice out of the three OTA workouts. Have no idea how he did Tuesday and Thursday. I think there is reason to be concerned any time your No. 1 overall draft pick is missing basic passes, and when his own coach says his biggest problems are ``accuracy and knowing where and when to go with the ball'' then, yes, it's a problem. Those are only the two most important things about playing the position.

Yeah fuck it Russell is a bust, he has had what 3 years to learn the same system? I mean its not like we've made drastic changes like change head coaches, change the play caller 4 times in 3 years, and hire two new QB/Pass cords to teach him...not even close to that.
Russell has had the consistency in coaching staff for 3 years, he should know the system.

Point is... he isnt making simple, THE MOST SIMPLE throws in non contact drills....
Yes, it is only May...
Yes, training camp has only started...
Is it still good? HELL NO
Also, it doesn't take 3 years of studying the same coaches playbook to make a 1 yard dump pass in non contact drills....
Let's blame it on Al Davis and the coaching carousel..
Yes, I agree that's part of the problem...
So, why are we NOT calling J Russ a bust NOW??
The carousel wont stop... Al Davis aint going anywhere...
he is the one constant... So Jamarcus is a bust. no?
I bet Nathaniel there could make a one yard dump pass. WTF gives? All I know is those are two of the most noticeable deficits in Jamarcus' game, and he made it apparent consistently last year, even when he HAD the protectrion or open recievers...
I'm pretty much done with this topic unless it resurfaces in TC, but I really hope Russ can hone his game before the games start, cuz bad timing and bad accuracy = bad QB, despite how strong his arm is. And its not like youre hearing it from one guy. Every blogger at these camps including the HC have acknowledged it yet.

No Russell accuracy issues are a concern, but knowing where and the ball goes is basically because of the new system...now could accuracy be struggling because he is thinking to much? Yes, but is that an excuse for a dump off pass, no.
Accuracy a concern - Yes
The whole where and when - No

Russell rarely ever had good protection and a consistent starting WRs, how can you develop good timing and chemistry with a WR when there is a new one every week? Ok maybe he got good blocking on one drive, then the next horrible. If your getting ripped from the blindside how are you gonna trust your O-Line? Which is why he looked somewhat jump and accuracy was off when he had time.
Yes its 2 games, but its something to look at. When we had Higgins and Shielens start consistently, and actually make the catches with the line playing well for more than a drive how did Russell look?
I'm not happy with what I'm hearing about Russell either, but to put the blame on Russell last year when your fucking starting WR is Ashley Lelie and Ronald Curry and your ass is protected by Harris is ridiculous.

We had a big arm QB who didn't put in the work before. His name was Jeff George. We eventually shit-canned him for a journeyman named Rich Gannon. A guy who stayed in shape, learned the playbook, and was a leader on the field and off. That worked out pretty well. It's setting up to go that way again. It's all just speculation till the season starts, but I can't believe how people will cut a guy some slack who just got paid like he won the lottery. He should be working his ass off. We should not be discussing accuracy and work ethic. As far as the system change, JR said the termonolgy and some verbage changed, but much more. I would rather go with Garcia and win in the short term, than stick with someone who won't put in the work. There is always another veteran to go after when Garcia's tank is empty. That's the way we've won in the past, not with drafted QB's. A veteran and a good running game will get us results. Of course, the O-Line will be the deciding factor. It's no coincidence that there are three O-Line guys from a great era in the hall of fame.

I agree with a lot of your post, but Ill add STOPPING THE RUN, or GETTING OFF THE FIELD ON 3RD DOWN!!!!
Our Defense needs to show up because this offense isnt built to come from behind or put up a lot of points. The past few seasons teams have been able to win by scoring a quick 10 points. Once we fell behind 10, more than likely it was over.
I'd like to add that getting off the field on 3rd down is of extreme importance because we also have a QB that may or may not ever be great enough to rally us from a looming deficit.
Stopping the run is crucial for most any team though.

I still stay strong in my stance that offseason means nothing, and I'm really trying my hardest not to pay any mind to OTAs and such. Even TC and the preseason, it's nothing more than filling out your 53 man roster, I mean the motherfucking 0-16 Detroit Lions went 4-0 in the 2008 preseason. That's all the proof you need.
That being said, I am a little worried about Jamarcus. You cannot be missing easy throws in practice, 7 on 7 drills the ball really should not even hit the ground. But I think we'll be ok. As long as the running game is cranked up like it SHOULD HAVE BEEN last year, I think we can be middle of the pack on offense.
But it's up to Jamarcus to make it happen, bottom line. You don't draft a QB first overall just to have him hand it off all day long.

Yeah, you're absoulutely right about getting off the field. This is an important point. I think our running game can help here alot. By running the ball, we can control the time of possession and give the defense a chance to rest. I always thought our defense suffered in recent years by having to stay out on the field too long. We have to avoid going three and out. This is where I think Bush will be a factor. If used like Ty Wheat, we can wear down opponents, and rest our D. This is where Garcia and his West Coast style can check it down and move the chains. Nothing wrong with JR to DHB, but if we don't complete it , then wer're looking at terrible down and distance situations. The O-Line must carry this team to where it wants to go.

I some what agree Buck but Russell should have never been the #1 pick in the draft just as DHB should not have been the #7 pick. If these guys never should have been taken this high I can't blame them for being stiffs. This is why you pay a GM to find the best players to fit your game plan. What is our game plan? What ever Al says it is!

Russell weighed in at 290 lbs straight up. Not what I was hoping to hear about our #1 draft pick....

If he's really 290 that would be a bad sign. I know Russell is a "big dude" and he's never gonna be a 240 lb QB, but even for him 290 would seem like a lot.
Either way, I'm trying to reserve judgement until game days come and he puts it on the field. If he's productive, winning football games, what happens back here in May/June will be put aside.

I would be pissed to If Garcia beat Russell out but have you ever though about this, what If Russell is just not good enough to be our starting QB? We all know that he is raw yet Al used the #1 pick on him. Are you going to hold Al to the same standards as you hold Russell? If Russell is such a stiff why did we draft him? I'm just saying man. Who drafted Huff? Who drafted Gallery? Who used a #1 on a kicker? Who fires the HC every two years? I'm not covering for Russell I think Al was crazy to use the #1 on him with all the other major problems this team has. We just used the #7 pick on a WR who does not run good routes and has "problems" catching the ball and passed on Crabtree and Macklin and a couple of franchise LT's. The reason this team sucks is because we draft fast stiffs who can't play football and strong armed QB's who can't make plays. Russell is not the first strong armed QB we drafted who turned out to be a bum. Russell may or may not end up as a top QB but why blame him for lacking the talent to make it, blame the person who drafted him. So If you are going to ride Russell I expect you to ride the man who calls all the shots.

well i guess there's a lot of jazz and fans get worried about it because athletes get paid the big bucks to take care of them selves and their bodies. Think about gladiators way back in the days (which is where sports evolved from) they weren't overweight...i can honestly say that i was a bit worried about it in the beginning but he actually looks a lot better now than a few months ago and i rest assured from recent reports. You gotta think about it like this no he doesn't owe "US" anything but he does owe our team a fair shot at a good season and to be an example to the team as the captain. i mean damn he is overpaid, that's money we could have spent on other players to help produce wins, but AL relied on his to pull throw as we all do..........

Oh you know me bro, look at the avatar. Al gets NO free pass from me...but at the same time Al cant hold these guys hands to go to the gym, the film room, whatever it may be. No matter what they were drafted, they should try to be the best player they can be, and we as fans can only hope that they can help this team. Agree there are way more talented people that could have been drafted but it is what it is. Al is dillusional. His draft picks are like throwing shit against the wall and hoping something sticks.
But I see it like this, you were drafted to play football, being paid better than all of us hard working joes...grow up, take the job serious and put in your best effort...dont short change us, the fans with half assed effort or a shitty "were gonna lose anyways" attitude.
:laughing Too funny...like he almost forgot he was allowed to run.
Yeah, I wonder how much of that was his short leash, and how much of it was him simply not going for it. At LSU he scrambled a lot laterally, but I dont think I've ever seen him get downfeld.

Yeah, making a lot of big throws on the run...that one time he got out of the pocket and threw that laser to jerry porter was a thing of beauty. I wanna see more of that shit!

yup. He had a couple of other strikes on the run last year that were impressive. When he scrambled against KC, picked up like 20 yds and cleaned that DB's clock to finish the run, that was tight.
With better tackle play this year, I hope he is more confident to pull it down and pick up yards when nothings open.

I hear what your saying but I don't think your understanding what I'm saying. What I'm saying is this If we draft a player who does not have the talent (Huff) why blame that player If he never had the talent in the first place? We all have said that Huff is a stiff and he is, no matter how hard he tries, no matter how much he puts out in practice he just does not have what it takes. How is it his fault when he never had the talent? That's all I'm saying, Russell is what he is he may turn into something down the road but you just don't use the #1 pick in the draft on a player who may be four or five years away from being good. That's all I'm saying, Matt Ryan is ready now, Joe Flaco is ready now, Big Ben was ready when he was drafted. Russell was not so I don't expect him to show leadership or pose or be in top shape. He is young and don't know :shit:. Just think If say we still had Gannon as our QB and we drafted Russell #1 and he sat on the bench for say three years watching and learning from Gannon. Don't you think that by the time he became the starting QB he would be doing a lot better than he is now? Who has been here to teach Russell how to play QB in the NFL? Tui and Walter! How many OC's has he had in his three years here? Four! How can he learn anything under these conditions?

I hear what your saying Vix and I agree, this is why we need a GM and better scouting. A GM would look at how a player prepares, If he is smart, If he takes care of his body and stays in shape. We don't do these things, Al calls the shots and that's it. We sink or swim Al's way and that's the bottom line.

Totally agree with you and forgot to put that in my original post...you cant transplant talent into a player. Either they have it or they dont....and Al screws up the draft by picking speed over talent. Speed over football IQ. Speed over football playing ability period! Ridiculous...look what its done for this team. Nothing.
