Dude, I have no faith in Kirk Morrison.... Before he talks about how the D can be dominating he should address why he gets dominated every fucking running play and how he plans on fixing the angles he takes in pursuit.

Our Run D is trash...
WOW - this one struck me as pretty funny....
PFW: Is there anything in particular you’re working on improving during OTAs?
Morrison: One thing you’re always improving is your situational play. We’re talking about red zone, goal line, third down, first and second down, four-minute defense vs. four-minute offense. I think that’s what you kind of focus on during the OTAs.
^^^^
Oh, by "situational" you mean virtually the entire fuckin' game dude?

Morrison says his leadership role will come? It's his fifth friggin year with the Raiders! I can't wait til TC when Joseph makes him look like a pussy, in terms of run defense and tackling anyways.
lol Bump^^
116 tackle average, great. But what were the yards gained by the opposition on those tackles? exactly.

True. Listening to Cable and now Morrison about how good this defense will be makes me wonder If they have been hitting the pipe. We have damn near the same stiffs on defense as last season and Cable says the problems can be fixed with better coaching. How about getting some better players!

Back it up on field! Im sick of the dumb talk of how dominating our D is gonna be or in the past how Kerry Collins would throw 100 TDs, blah blah...Fuck that shit already. Im not sucked in by the hype and shit talk...especially Cable saying playoffs. HA! Prove it!!!

The funny thing is, I tailgate with his family on a regular. Mr. Morrison even agreed with me that Kirk would be more effective in the Will.
No matter how much you love your team or have personal connections to the players, you are playin yourself if you arent realistic about where theyre at. Now to say we have nothing to be optimistic about would be selling this squad a bit short, as I believe we have some solid pieces in place, but you aint about to hear the overt optimism that I was guilty of two years ago. :roc:

I remember when Kolby Smith was slashing the Raiders up in a 2007 game vs KC and I started a thread about Kirk Morrison being kind of a pussy on RFN. Kirk made a stop on a straight up the middle run on 4th and 1 that more or less won the Raiders the game and everyone acted like it was some huge egg in my face that Morrison finally tackled Kolby Smith after he'd already put up 100+ yards.

I hope I get this CBS gig and am there to watch Joseph outplay Morrison in run defense. Brown may even be better, who knows. The fact that they decided to go with the guys they have AGAIN (Sands, Warren) at NT is very worrisome.
If Sands nosedives like last year and the year before, Raiders aren't going to be able to dosh!t on defense again.

There are obviously no kool-aid drinkers around here, so I've now decided to become the token kool-aid drinker of this forum. Purely from a contrarian/devil's advocate stand-point--I'm gonna raise hell. Logic, facts, stats mean nothing to me. Please don't try to screw up a perfectly good wet dream by stating facts--I won't listen to them.
As far as Kirk Morrison goes:
1) He should be Pro-bowl LB. The only reason he isn't is because the Raiders haven't fared so well in the last 6 seasons (mostly due to media bias--if the media hadn't treated us so badly we would have won a lot more games). (See Nnamdi Asomugha until this year when people couldn't ignore him anymore).
2) KM is a die-hard Raider fan, which automatically makes him a shoe-in for the HOF. If he doesn't get in, they're all a bunch of haters.
3) He is THE prototype linebacker. The only reason he has any problems at all is: a) the defensive line is crap. b) he gets no safety support. c) the offense can't convert 3rd downs so he's on the field too long and gets winded. d) because even the greatest of linebackers needs a breather once in a while--Dude, just needs some gatorade. Leave him the hell alone. He'll play when he wants to play.
4) If it werent' for Rob Ryan/Lane Kiffin, Kirk would be a household name right now. I'm tired of all the haters giving Kirk a hard time.

I am worried about our D, we have a new D coach not sure how he will fair but hope he is better at teaching these guys how to tackle then Ryan was (I mean how embarrassing is it that even Ryan's wife asked him to teach the guys how to tackle). I'm hoping our offense does a better job this year at time of possession that way our big guys on D can rest up, I think that was one problem they were having was being on the field all the time they are big guys they get tired. And Captain Kirk better learn how to tackle out in space.
I believe in Trevor Scott he will have a good year, just a feeling. :)

^^ IMO, we did not do nearly enough in the offseason on defense. Although I agree we needed to get a few more weapons for Russell, I would have been much happier with some help on defense at that #7 pick. There were far better prospects than one DHB at that point and IMO, better options that could have helped the team more. We could have still gotten Murphy and gone after a vet for more help. We've heard that we are a run-first team, so IMO, with Murphy and a vet plus Miller and the incumbents, Russell would have something to work with.
The D on the other hand, hasn't stopped the run in years. Expecting Kelly and Sands to magically get better is a gamble I wouldn't put money on. Expecting our DE's to suddenly play a better all-around game, is another gamble I'm not interested in. I like our secondary other than having no FS and 3 potential SS. But meh, that's me. Our LB's are largely 1-dimensional, but hey, maybe they are suffering with a crappy DLine in front of them....good thing we fixed that problem....er....well....maybe not.....
Rant over. Bottom line, I have a feeling that next offseason, DL is going to be our "major" need to fill.

Great post, Crispy. Obviously the personell dep. (Al Davis) is banking on Kelly being a year removed from surgery to magically become this three technique stud that he has never been, and for Gerard Warren's constantly torn pectoral muscle to suddenly become plate armor etc...
I do think that Mitchell can be an effective FS though, he played both positions equally in college and has the speed/strength combo that Huff never had...

Branch is what we've been hearing will make the starting lineup, and it sounds like they like him at strong safety. Mitchell played both free and strong at Ohio and definately is stronger than Huff and a solid tackler (at least in college).
He's also a 4.3 speedster. He needs to get that hamstring right (like Heyward-Bey) for TC and hopefully he doesn't get injured again otherwise Eugene wil make the most of the reps and I remember reading somewhere the staff ikes him and says he's like a leader out there.

I think his logic is folly, but who am I. Kelly is a good player, but it will take a whole lot of magic dust to turn him into a monster IMO. Warren is not bad off the bench. Dude can dominate a few games a year and is decent in others. The other half a season he's either hurt or invisible. Sands better get his big body into gear cause if he sucks up the joint again, it will just spiral down the DL from there. IMO, he's the pivot man that can really make Al look half senile instead of completely delusional. We have so much money taken up in partial players on our DLine it ain't funny.
TK is a good player that banked major $$$ and sadly is probably our only legit NFL quality starter on the DL. I know the market at that position, yada yada, but that still doesn't mean ya gotta sign him. Sands is supposed to be the big body that stops the run and eats up blockers...instead he only eats up samiches, smacks our Pro Bowl punter and lays down for RB's. Let's hope a supposed "trimmed down" Sands is ready to earn his damned paycheck - Turd. Warren should be a solid backup and that's what he is....maybe overpaid, but not breaking the bank. Burgess is a one-dimensional pass rusher and prolly on the way out. Ditto Ellis but on the way in. Scott I like, but again, not exactly a run stopper, let's see what happens this year with the added bulk he's supposedly carrying. Richardson is decent at everything and great at nothing. A good tackler who will occaisionally push the pocket.
As a whole, our DLine is uninspiring outside of Scott. Yet we draft a project WR @ #7. As usual, I'm just a fan and I'm not an expert so I'll just hope they made the right move.
As for Mitchell, I dunno, I hope he can make the critics eat their words. As for Branch, I like him....I dunno if he's ready to start, but I hope so.
