I think it's a good hit myself, perhaps a little ill-timed. I can certainly understand the reasoning for the flag though. They didn't throw the flag for the hit, they threw a flag for "fair catch interference". If the dude would've had the ball, everybody would've said that that was a great hit. Hell, I grew up watching Tatum, Atkinson and Lott nail guys like that every single week.
