How does swine flu spread?
Influenza viruses can be directly transmitted from pigs to people and from people to pigs. Human infection with flu viruses from pigs are most likely to occur when people are in close proximity to infected pigs, such as in pig barns and livestock exhibits housing pigs at fairs. Human-to-human transmission of swine flu can also occur. This is thought to occur in the same way as seasonal flu occurs in people, which is mainly person-to-person transmission through coughing or sneezing of people infected with the influenza virus. People may become infected by touching something with flu viruses on it and then touching their mouth or nose.
What do we know about human-to-human spread of swine flu?
In September 1988, a previously healthy 32-year-old pregnant woman was hospitalized for pneumonia and died 8 days later. A swine H1N1 flu virus was detected. Four days before getting sick, the patient visited a county fair swine exhibition where there was widespread influenza-like illness among the swine.
In follow-up studies, 76% of swine exhibitors tested had antibody evidence of swine flu infection but no serious illnesses were detected among this group. Additional studies suggest that one to three health care personnel who had contact with the patient developed mild influenza-like illnesses with antibody evidence of swine flu infection.

We just received a memo on this at work:
Memorandum
[We] are working closely with the Department of Homeland Security and the Office of Personnel Management to be responsive and stay informed about swine flu outbreaks. I have mobilized the our emergency preparedness organization to be ready to respond and to help with the situation in any way we can. My primary consideration is ensuring your safety and keeping you informed.
Human cases of swine flu have been identified in several states and in other countries. Unlike the situation in Mexico, where deaths have been associated with the disease, cases in the U.S. have been less severe. While medical experts continue to evaluate the virus, resources from across the Federal Government have been mobilized to provide guidance to the American public and protect public health.
It is important to recognize the ongoing nature of this event and the fact that public health guidance may change as this event transpires and more becomes known about this virus. Public health officials advise that good health habits like covering your mouth when you cough and washing your hands can often help stop the spread of germs and prevent respiratory illnesses like the flu. Those who do catch the flu are strongly encouraged to seek medical help.
The best source of information about the flu can be found at http://www.cdc.gov/swineflu/. This site contains the latest information and will address questions that you may have regarding the current situation.
Throughout this situation, it is important that you stay informed and act wisely to protect your own health, the health of your co-workers, and be available to serve the public. We may be asked to step in and assist in efforts to respond to this event. In the meantime, each of us must take personal responsibility to practice the good health habits advised by medical experts. We will make information available to employees at ******. Your health, your families’ well being, and the health of the Nation are foremost in my mind, and we will continue to provide the best possible information that we can.
Thank you

Only 20 of the deaths in Mexico have been linked to swine flu so far, everything else is breathing complications.
From what I understand, most of the outbreak is in South Mexico, and the outbreak in the United States has not been nearly as fatal.

Yeah there is a huge Asian population here and that is where the SARS virus originated from. I can remember MLB players wanted the league to cancel their games vs. the Blue Jays because they were too scared to come here! The WHO placed a high alert warning on traveling and said to only enter the city "If totally necessary" and shit! It was crazy.

They just sent this out at my work for San Diego County...
To: Emergency Medical Alert Network (EMAN) Participants
Date: April 28, 2009
Patients Presenting with Influenza-Like Illness in San Diego County
Given that cases of swine influenza A (H1N1) infection have been confirmed in multiple counties and numerous states, San Diego
County is now in mitigation mode (trying to limit the spread of the virus) versus containment mode (trying to inhibit the spread).
On that basis, there is no further need for clinicians in San Diego County to perform swine influenza A (H1N1) testing on outpatients
who present with influenza-like illness. However, clinicians should continue to submit specimens for swine influenza A (H1N1) testing
on patients who require hospitalization for severe influenza-like illness (temperature >100ºF, and cough and/or sore throat).
For patients meeting the above criteria, collect a nasopharyngeal (NP) swab and place it in a standard container with 2-3 ml of viral
transport media (VTM). A nasopharyngeal wash or nasopharyngeal aspirate is also acceptable. NP swabs should be submitted even if
a rapid flu test is negative. Specimens should be delivered to the San Diego County Public Health Laboratory at 3851 Rosecrans St.,
Ste. 716, San Diego, CA 92110.
Instructions for NP swab collection can be found on EMAN under the “News” section. A specimen submission form entitled “Influenza
Virus Culture Request Form (Swine Influenza)” is also available on EMAN under the “News” section. Specimen collection specifics can
also be found at: http://www.cdc.gov/swineflu/specimencollection.htm.
Educating Patients Presenting with Influenza-Like Illness
San Diego County clinicians should continue to strongly encourage patients presenting with influenza-like illness (ILI) to stay home from
work or school and limit contact with others while they are symptomatic, ideally up to 7 days following their symptom onset, except to
receive treatment for severe illness or to address life threatening emergencies. ILI is defined as temperature >100ºF, and cough and/or
sore throat. Patients may be referred to CDC’s Interim Guidance for Swine influenza A (H1N1): Taking Care of a Sick Person in Your
Home at http://www.cdc.gov/swineflu/guidance_homecare.htm
All San Diego County healthcare facilities are encouraged to post the “Cover Your Cough” or similar posters at patient care settings. A
copy of the “Cover Your Cough” poster is now available on EMAN under the “News” section.

Damn I guess that means the only hope is to try to "contain" the spread? Looks like it may go into a pandemic at some point.....and their going to use swine flu test on people who require hospitalization. So people who handle the illness better may have it, but not know its actual "Swine Flu". Yikes.

I'll take advantage since the economy is bad and consider myself lucky to work OT but I really hope this pandemonium settles down. These types of things always happen in waves thru the years......
I know if I had a small child that was very sick w/the flu I'd be in line making sure it was just the flu as well but also that they are taken care of properly to get better. Like others have said many people die each year from the flu and any flu needs to be watched and cared for.

Thank you for this info. I told my mom and she spoke w/my brothers pediatrician. Great Dr. here in Diego. He suggested that my brother not take the pill. It has to be administered within 48 hrs and it was just past this. He did say that he wouldn't give it to his own kid and that it does have crazy side effects. I'm glad my brother didn't take it.
Sooo apparantly there has been 1 case of the swine flu in San Diego. The child was treated at Children's hospital and released.
I worked registration at the ER yesterday...wow! It was crazy in there. Parents were waiting 2-5 hrs for their kids to be seen because they had a sniffle.
Media sure has hyped this all up. I can see if the child is super sick or if it's a small baby, shoot swine flu or not I'd be in the Dr's office but this was crazy.
I felt bad for the kid that came in cuz he had a cut finger or a fractured bone...having to shuffle everyone around to get those kids in and the parents getting all upset cuz they had to wait and wait to be seen. Oh well people!!
One lady came in..her child was NOT SICK!!! He had coughed a little bit, no fever no flu like symptoms! They brought in their child because a relative who was NOT SICK came over from Mexico
Goood Night!!!! wow!!!
