Darrius Heyward-Bey, 22, still is soaking in the fact that a skinny kid from Silver Spring can make it so far in such a short time. He will don a Raiders uniform for the first time Friday, when the team begins a three-day mini-camp in Alameda.

Every year this rings out; "oh Huff will be fine; Washingtons going to be really good, I'm not worried about him; Gibson is a stud; Buchanon is going to be awesome; Langston Walker is huge and will do well; Gallery and Grove shore up the line for 10 years; Napoleon Harris is going to be solid; lol; every year we hear what MIGHT be and not what is.
I watched Bey 4 times last year; He's a fast guy playing football; (I went 3-1 in betting against Maryland); 2 games he didnt' catch a pass and dropped 3, and the two others he combined for 3 catches. In a month stretch he caught 2 balls.
In 3 years he caught 13 total TD's. The ACC was not a good conference.
There just comes a time when you have to say it is what it is. Crabtree did it at the highest level in the biggest games; hurt and unhurt. Even through double teams.
Bey reminds me of the dozens of classic fast Raider WR that never pan out in the NFL; the Raiders have a long history of them.
This draft may be one of the worst in Raider history. Another NFL combine pick that is the fastest; Huff, Gibson, Buchanon, Routt, Washington were all the fastest in the draft or near it.
The Raiders can't draft; the facts prove it.

DHB deserves a shot atleast, then you can resort back to your facts.

Of course he deserves a shot... and he will get one. That doesn't mean that Ice is wrong. I have to agree with him.

Doesn't mean hes wrong but doesn't mean that every player we draft will suck.

Your logic does suck though. The Raiders are notoriously bad at drafting. The excuse for a bad pick right after it happens is "WELL MAYBE THEY SAW SOMETHING IN HIM." Then when the pick sucks that year, the excuse is "HE'S A ROOKIE. GIVE HIM A BREAK." Then when he continues to suck and eventually falls off, the same people say "wow, what a stupid pick, I wish we knew how to draft." That is, until the next shitty pick when they're pre-crafting apologies again.
The Raiders suck at drafting. The draft is not a "crapshoot" if you know how to draft and scout, and NEITHER IS FREE AGENCY. You can get the solid pickups and fit them into your system, even if they're just depth signings. You can get value from your late round picks. You can find superstars in nobodies. Al Davis has not done this consistently in decades. The teams that do this win football games. Lots and lots of football games. Look at the Chargers. They looked dead in the water for the first half of the season with all the critical injuries, but they were a DEEP team, and when those players gelled in the 2nd half they played different football. That's what teams with real scouting and development have. That's what teams that DRAFT WELL have. We don't have this and I'm sick of the sheep who use inane bullshit to justify just how fucking atrocious we are at drafting.

Yes he does deserve a shot but we had to many holes on this team to waste our first pick on a "speed" WR. :csa:

Word! I get tired of hearing the "Al will get it done" crowd. Some of us act like Al knows something the rest of the NFL does not. We suck at drafting plain and simple and the reason is Al

Its not really logic....
I hated the DHB pick at 7, especially with Crabtree here. But I'm willing to give the kid a chance cause we are stuck with him anyway. Is it wrong to hope the guy is gonna work out? Or is it better to be a fan and just say everything will go wrong all the time.
Not saying the kid is gonna be great or bad, its just that it seems people are so pissed off at our bad drafting that they hope the new drafts fail so they can say "I told you".
Every drafted player has a chance of a bust, even those "safe picks".
And everyone is tired of losing....and I'm not gonna sit here and say oh Al will get it done, or we will win with this guy. I just want our picks to work out so we can win games, not hope that they dont and continue to lose.

crabtree and DHB have the same nfl stats 0 receiptions - yards - 0 TDs
I'm giving the kid a shot. I learned a long time ago that my opinion about who we draft means bupkis so I find the positive in the pick and go back to criticizing it in week 1. My thing is with the amount of wideouts that we brought in...one of these guys can actually play ball I think. I don't care who is playing where as long as we are winning!

the patriots suck at drafting too....didn't the cut everyone they drafted that wasn't a first or 2nd draft pick? and the media gave them a pass...the only difference with us is that we hang on to guys that show bum-di-tude longer than most. The 2007 draft isn't looking too bad in hindsight. We gotta give these guys a couple years to form an opinion anyway. Many players don't contribute right away...thems just the facts....look at JLH.....guy had kind of a break out year...look to see more from him.
After DHB got the dropsies garcia pulled him aside and JLH yelled at him..you gotta catch that!
He'll learn or he won't....the thing is we gotta get like cable last year all the time. If you don't wanna step up we'll put someone else in there....now there's this certain 7th round pick that showed he can probably play at this level...we'll see.

He didn't fail, but I will not argue with you about that last part. I remember discussing him as a possible 2nd rounder (if he fell a few spots). The combine did help him move up some projections, and we did reach at 7.

I dunno Ice said the Raiders are bad at drafting and that is true, but last years draft did not suck with McFadden, Trevor Scott, Chad Schilens, Branch and Arman Shields, Shields being the only one that didn't perform so we still don't know about him. Everybody thought the Raiders drafted bad yet they did well and I hope they continue to do so. So I got to give our draftee's this year the benefit of the doubt that they will do good.
